Houston, Tx show 08/15/2024

I had the opportunity to work with the Varsity Sports Media Foundation aka Varsity Sports Show throughout the Fall semester of 2024. Overall, my experience was a very positive one. I learned a lot about sports journalism and broadcasting and got to work with some great people. Being part of this internship allowed me to experience different facets of sports reporting and media including play by play and color commentating, field corresponding and sideline interviewing, camera operating, and creating content and pre-recorded segments for radio. This internship taught me to work collaboratively with others in a fast paced environment. It also taught me about commitment, flexibility, deadlines, and how important communication skills are needed in every work setting. The internship required traveling to different locations every week which allowed me to venture to places I had never been before. At first it seemed annoying to have to do this, but in reality it was a great experience to see other places in Arizona and be immersed in the culture of these small towns. My favorite was Bisbee and I hope to go back there again soon. I am grateful for the relationships I made during this internship with fellow co-workers and thankful for being part of the Varsity team. I have gained so much experience with different facets of media and now have an arsenal of skills and work samples in my portfolio. My communication skills improved greatly during this internship because I had to interact and interview coaches and players in a live professional setting. These experiences helped me improve skills in talking with others. Vince, the supervisor and owner of Varsity Sports Show, was easily accessible and always a call or text away if I had questions, concerns or needed assistance. If you accept a position with Varsity, be prepared to work a lot of hours and don’t ask for time off. A full commitment is expected and required. Overall, my experience was positive and I got a lot out of it.
